Living Filtration Membranes Demonstrate Antibiofouling Properties

چکیده
Membrane filters are excellent prospects for increasing global access to safe water; however, they significantly limited by fouling, particularly biofouling. Fouling plagues membranes reducing efficiency and maintenance costs. Biofouling is problematic due the self-replicating nature of microorganisms secretion extracellular polymeric substances that make biofilm difficult remove. Living filtration (LFMs) a sustainable membrane technology composed bacterial cellulose native microorganisms. In this study, natural water from Butte, Montana’s three municipal drinking sources (Basin Creek Reservoir, Moulton Big Hole River) was pretreated with coagulant used in 400 min bench-scale dead-end tests. Two were compared─an LFM commercial mixed ester (MCE) similar nominal pore size. Although MCE more hydrophilic had smoother surface, surface properties that, general, may improve fouling resistance certain particles, rapid flux decline live biomass observed all waters. We suggest LFM’s biofouling be proliferation bacteria, Acetobacter, which produces acetic acid, known antibiofilm antibacterial agent.

Carbon Nanotube Membranes: Synthesis, Properties, and Future Filtration Applications
Over the course of the past decade, there has been growing interest in the development of different types of membranes composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), including buckypapers and composite materials, for an ever-widening range of filtration applications. This article provides an overview of how different types of CNT membranes are prepared and the results obtained from investigations into th...
متن کاملEffect of polymer brush architecture on antibiofouling properties.
Polymer brushes show great promise in next-generation antibiofouling surfaces. Here, we have studied the influence of polymer brush architecture on protein resistance. By carefully optimizing reaction conditions, we were able to polymerize oligoglycerol-based brushes with sterically demanding linear or dendronized side chains on gold surfaces. Protein adsorption from serum and plasma was analyz...
متن کاملCharacterization and Antibiofouling Performance Investigation of Hydrophobic Silver Nanocomposite Membranes: A Comparative Study
Biofouling is one of the drawbacks restricting the industrial applications of membranes. In this study, different thicknesses of silver nanoparticles with proper adhesion were deposited on poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF) and polyethersulfone (PES) surfaces by physical vapor deposition (PVD). The crystalline and structural properties of modified and pure membranes were investigated by carrying o...
متن کاملSelective filtration of antibiotics through collodion membranes.
Marked differences were noted among 14 antibiotics in their filterability through collodion (nitrated cellulose) membranes. The findings could not be attributed to differences in molecular weight or degree of serum protein binding, although the latter factor imposed an additional restraint on the passage of certain agents. Poorly filtered antibiotics appeared to be absorbed by the collodion. So...
متن کاملFiltration properties of nonwovens.
This paper presents the results and conclusions from experimental investigations concerning filtration properties of nonwovens. The needled nonwovens were made from polyester fibres (PTE) with average fibre diameter 12 micrometres and polypropylene fibres (PP) with average fibre diameter 32 micrometres. Nonwovens were produced out of each of those fibres or out of a mixture of polyester and pol...
